The history of the cell phone ringtone explosion all stared with the now famous (or infamous, depending on the observer) Nokia ringtone which is a thirteen note rendition of the 19th century Spanish musician, Francisco Tarrega’s ‘Gran Vals’.

The very first ringtones, of course, were monophonic meaning that only one note at a time is heard. These ring tones tend to sound like elevator music, but worse. Then again, the novelty of being able to set our cell phones to ring with a recognizable tune was innovative enough to hold the attention of most of us.

Around the early years of ringtone technology there were built in ring tone composer programs that allowed users to create and input custom tunes to their cell phones. This, however, did not take off and was soon discarded.

In 2002 the first  came out and represented a major milestone for cell phone ringtone technology. This feat was first accomplished by Nokia. The Nokia 3510 was the very first phone capable of playing polyphonic ring tones. Very soon thereafter, the other major cell phone companies came out with their own versions of this polyphonic technology.

MP3 Ringtones are great because even though they lack that retro je ne sais quoi, well, you can actually tell what song they’re supposed to be. Then again, what’s so great about removing the fun of guessing which song the muzak-like ringtone symbolizes? I for one sort of enjoy that guessing game.

Now it’s a completely different story when it comes to a song I really like and respect. I suppose then it is a question of proper reverence. It just doesn’t sound right to hear Beethoven in midi format. I mean how many times can you hear ‘Ode to Joy’ with only a fraction of the orchestral magic that the tune requires intact?

So maybe have a place in today’s fast paced and thoroughly wired world. If nothing else it sure makes using custom rings (what people hear that call your number) that much more fun. After all, half the fun of choosing special call tones for each person that calls you to hear is being able to meta-say something with the lyrics of the chosen song.

Just ‘how free’ are free ringtones? Well, it really depends on your definition of the word ‘free’. For most people it means ‘no charge’ and there are few exceptions to the definition. However, there are so many ‘free ringtones’ websites out there that just plain are not free, yet no one seems to be doing anything about it. Oh I know that the cell phone companies are doing their best to combat this cell phone download site type of spam / scammers, but the average person who is taken by one of these so-called ringtone+sites" rel="tag">free ringtone sites just lets it slide, thus encouraging these bogus sites.

How does it work?

The Interest In

There are many features and benefits to owning and utilizing a Cingular cell phone, as well as having a fairly good plan to help allow you do yourself a service without having to deal with any particular problems with billing that you cannot solve through speaking with a proper representative, and some of the bonuses attached to your plan include items such as accessories as headphones and such things as ringtones and graphics.  With most ringtones, it can be troublesome to find those particular themes that you really want, but that are actually quite difficult to acquire, as a friend of mine found out first hand.

Been choosing a new ringtone for your cell?
Spend an hour in the student lounge at Lincoln Land Community College’s Menard Hall, for example, and the volume of cell-expression is mind-bending - a snippet of the old “Super Mario Bros.” theme to the left, a tune from the Broadway musical “Avenue Q” to the right, a rhythmic mash-up of traditional phone rings over there, the total nonsense of D4L’s club hit “Laffy Taffy” over here.
This is just another case of self-expression through ringtones. On a personal level, ringtones simply reveals your personality but it means big time for a $3 billion ringtone+download" rel="tag">ringtone download industry. Studies have shown that your ringtone reveals your personality much like the way you choose your clothings. Chances are that you will choose a ringtone in particular if you have some memories attached.
On the other hand, sometimes, it just means nothing. Gina Kaiser’s phone emits some kind of spacey, swirly, new-agey thing. But don’t bother prying into Kaiser’s psyche, the Springfield woman warns.
“It was a different ring,” she says. “And I got so tired of every time someone’s cell phone rang, everybody was grabbing for them, because they were all the same.”

: Can’t find what I want at the Nokia Site…

I’ve had a cell phone through Nokia for a couple of years now and am pretty happy with the service and the rates as well. But when it became more important for me to be able to download extra content, like wallpaper and ring tones I just couldn’t seem to find anything suited to my taste or interests. I set out on my own with just Google to lead the way.

My efforts for new and exciting ringtones was quickly rewarded with a plethora of websites claiming to have all kinds of Nokia ringtones for free. And many of these sites had song ring tones I hadn’t ever seen listed on the Nokia site. I was happy with my find but wanted to do some comparison shopping before committing to a purchase…

And I got to wondering just how it works that a third party website could offer a ringtone and it could be downloaded to my phone. I mean it would be one thing to physically link the phone to the PC and get the new ringtone installed that way, but I always opt for the free phone and surely didn’t have all that hardware and net savvy working for me.

I’m convinced that just tat question arises at the same point in deciding to use one of these ringtone sites and the bastards know the average human thought pattern there and use this knowledge to lure users like this: You’re asked to input your cell phone number so that they can verify to where the ring tone will be sent. See what I mean? “Ahhhh, okay, so that’s how it’s done”, feeling all assured that it must be legit if there’s a way to verify that you actually own the phone it’s easier to let go of the original query about the logistics.
